Play Golf Prolongs Life

Golf Prolongs Life, Swedish Study Finds

Golf can be a good investment for the health, according to a new study from the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet. The death rate for golfers is 40 per cent lower than for other people of the same sex, age and socioeconomic status, which correspond to a 5 year increase in life expectancy. Golfers with a low handicap are the safest.

It is a well-known fact that exercise is good for the health, but the expected health gains of particular activities are still largely unknown. A team of researchers from Karolinska Institutet has now presented a study of the health effects of golf -- a low-intensity form of exercise in which over 600,000 Swedes engage.

The study, which is published in Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, is based on data from 300,000 Swedish golfers and shows that golf has beneficial health effects. The death rate amongst golfers is 40 per cent lower than the rest of the population, which equates to an increased life expectancy of five years.

Professor Anders Ahlbom, who has led the study with Bahman Farahmand is not surprised at the result, as he believes that there are several aspects of the game that are proved to be good for the health.

'A round of golf means being outside for four or five hours, walking at a fast pace for six to seven kilometres, something which is known to be good for the health,' he says. 'People play golf into old age, and there are also positive social and psychological aspects to the game that can be of help.'

The study does not rule out that other factors than the actual playing, such as a generally healthy lifestyle, are also behind the lower death rate observed amongst golfers. However, the researchers believe it is likely that the playing of the game in itself has a significant impact on health.
 Golf players have a lower death rate regardless of sex, age and social group. The effect is greater for golfers from blue-collar professions than for those from white-collar professions. The lowest rates are found in the group of players with the lowest handicap (i.e. the best golfers).
'Maintaining a low handicap involves playing a lot, so this supports the idea that it is largely the game itself that is good for the health,' says Professor Ahlbom.

Top Foods for Healthy Skin

Almonds + Dark Chocolate

Talk about a match made in heaven! These two not only taste delicious together, they also are a free-radical fighting duo.
Almonds are crunchy, satisfying and packed full of Vitamin E. Vitamin E is a known antioxidant and can be very beneficial for repairing damaged cells, helping your skin look and feel amazing.
A delicious partner, dark chocolate is also rich in antioxidants, called flavonoids, which gobble up free radicals to protect your skin from visible damage. Combine these two for a tasty and useful snack.

Delicious red, juicy tomatoes are known for their high amounts of Lycopene, a carotenoid recognized for its antioxidant power. Studies have shown that consuming tomatoes or tomato paste on a regular basis can help reduce the appearance of sunburn.
Similar studies also show a boost in collagen attributed to the large amounts of lycopene in tomatoes which helps fight the look of aging. Freshly sliced, cooked, or pureed, tomatoes are your skin’s best friend.

Sweet Potatoes

How sweet it is — sweet potatoes are a wonderful source for Vitamin C, a known wrinkle-fighter, as well as beta-carotene. Vitamin C has long proven its effectiveness in protecting our skin from visible damage caused by the sun.
Vitamin C, a natural skin-lightener, also plays in a role in keeping a clear, even-toned complexion. Sweet potatoes are a perfect addition for holiday meals. Mash them or bake them for a yummy side dish to compliment any feast.

Salmon is a fresh, mild-tasting fish that also happens to be a miracle food for skin. Add rich luster to your skin with omega-3 fatty acids by lightly sautéing the fish in olive oil on low to medium heat.
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential healthy fats that help nourish the skin and regulate oil production for a beautiful glow.

Remember to Supplement

It’s important to note that a diet rich in these foods can help you look and feel better, but supplements will provide you with guaranteed amounts of vital nutrients. Try the MyHealthPak Beauty Edition for a synergistic blend of nutrients known to help your complexion.
Well there’s the scoop!
Wishing you all beauty and health.

5 Delicious “Bad Foods” That Are Actually Healthy

If you’ve had high blood pressure for a while, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes or any other chronic disease dominating modern society, chances are you’re trying to eat healthy.
The problem is “what’s healthy” seems to change daily. What was deadly yesterday is life-saving today. Sometimes there seems to be no way to keep up with the changes.
That’s why in this feature article I’m going to tell you about five delicious foods that are often considered “no-no” but have actually been proven healthy both in scientific studies and common sense tests.
These foods lower blood pressure, balance cholesterol and improve your overall health.

Most sweets are rightfully considered unhealthy. Moderate consumption of chocolate has, however, in several studies been proven to lower high blood pressure, improve cholesterol level and deliver several other health benefits.
There is a small catch, though. It’s really the cocoa that is healthy, so you should consume at least 70% dark chocolate. It’s also easy to overdo it. Just 50 grams of dark chocolate is plenty to get its health benefit.

Once cursed as the devil’s advocate, new studies have shown that the cholesterol in eggs does not raise your bad cholesterol or promote plaque build up. Not only that, there are even indications that eggs promote good cholesterol.
Eggs also contain high quality protein and are low in calories. They are therefore ideal for reaching weight loss goals. And there are several antioxidant ingredients in eggs that promote your overall health.

High in calories, high in fat, doctors and nutritionists alike used to warn against the consumption of nuts. But then studies began to roll in proving that several types of nuts improve heart health, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Even the FDA had to give in and allow producers of many types of nuts such as walnuts to mark their products “heart healthy.”
No need to go overboard, but one or two handfuls of nuts daily (despite their high calorie count) have also been proven in several studies not to add to the stubborn belly flab.

The debate over salt continues. Yes, it’s a fact that a high consumption of salt can raise your blood pressure. But the highest rise in blood pressure ever recorded due to salt intake was only 4-5 points. And we’re talking about extremely high salt consumption.
However, studies are showing that decreasing salt intake does not lower your risk of dying from stroke, heart attack or any other known disease.
Furthermore, it may not actually be the salt that increases blood pressure; but rather, the chemicals added to salt and how it’s processed. There are great indicators that high quality sea salt actually improves your overall health.
What you should restrict are highly processed foods full of chemicals and industrial type salt.

No we’re not giving you a free pass to load your plate with deep fried French-fries. This type of trans-fat is still considered bad.
Chewing on a big juicy baked potato is, however, as healthy as any other vegetable. Yes, it’s high in starch but these are complex carbohydrates so they drip into the blood stream slowly.
We need carbohydrates. But not highly processed carbohydrates like white, bleached wheat and especially not highly processed fructose carbohydrates like white sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
Potatoes are also extremely high in potassium, vitamin C and fiber, which all help lower your blood pressure and improve overall health.

These are just 5 examples of healthy foods that are too often labeled as bad for you.

The surprising benefits of lemon!

Institute of Health Sciences, 819 N. L.L.C. Charles Street Baltimore , MD 1201.

This is the latest in medicine, effective for cancer! Read carefully & you be the judge
Lemon (Citrus) is a miraculous product to kill cancer cells. It is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy.

Why do we not know about that? Because there are laboratories interested in making a synthetic version that will bring them huge profits. You can now help a friend in need by letting him/her know that lemon juice is beneficial in preventing the disease. Its taste is pleasant and it does not produce the horrific effects of chemotherapy.
How many people will die while this closely guarded secret is kept, so as not to jeopardize the beneficial multimillionaires large corporations?

As you know, the lemon tree is known for its varieties of lemons and limes. You can eat the fruit in different ways: you can eat the pulp, juice press, prepare drinks, sorbets, pastries, etc.. It is credited with many virtues, but the most interesting is the effect it produces on cysts and tumors. This plant is a proven remedy against cancers of all types. Some say it
is very useful in all variants of cancer. It is considered also as an anti microbialspectrum against bacterial infections and fungi, effective against internal parasites and worms, it regulates blood pressure which is too high and an antidepressant, combats stress and nervous disorders.

The source of this information is fascinating: it comes from one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world, says that after more than 20 laboratory tests since 1970, the extracts revealed that:
It destroys the malignant cells in 12 cancers including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreas ... The compounds of this tree showed 10,000 times better than the product Adriamycin, a drug normally used chemotherapeutic in the world, slowing the growth of cancer cells. And what is even more astonishing: this type of therapy with lemon extract only destroys malignant cancer cells and it does not affect healthy cells.

Processed Meats Declared Too Dangerous for Human Consumption

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has just completed a detailed review of more than 7,000 clinical studies covering links between diet and cancer.

 Its conclusion is rocking the health world with startling bluntness:

 Processed meats are too dangerous for human consumption. Consumers should stop buying and eating all processed meat products for the rest of their lives. Processed meats include bacon, sausage, hotdogs, sandwich meat, packaged ham, pepperoni, salami and virtually all red meat used in frozen prepared meals. They are usually manufactured with a carcinogenic ingredient known as sodium nitrite. This is used as a color fixer by meat companies to turn packaged meats a bright red color so they look fresh. Unfortunately, sodium nitrite also results in the formation of cancer-causing nitrosamines in the human body. And this leads to a sharp increase in cancer risk for those who eat them. A 2005 University of Hawaii study found that processed meats increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67 percent. Another study revealed that every 50 grams of processed meat consumed daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 50 percent. These are alarming numbers. Note that these cancer risks do not come from eating fresh, non-processed meats. They only appear in people who regularly consume processed meat products containing sodium nitrite.

Sodium nitrite appears predominantly in red meat products (you won't find it in chicken or fish products). Here's a short list of food items to check carefully for sodium nitrite and monosodium glutamate (MSG), another dangerous additive:

* Beef jerky
* Bacon
* Sausage
* Hot dogs
* Sandwich meat
* Frozen pizza with meat
* Canned soups with meat
* Frozen meals with meat
* Ravioli and meat pasta foods
* Kid's meals containing red meat
* Sandwich meat used at popular restaurants
* Nearly all red meats sold at public schools, restaurants, hospitals, hotels and theme parks.

If sodium nitrite is so dangerous to humans, why do the FDA and USDA continue to allow this cancer-causing chemical to be used? The answer, of course, is that food industry interests now dominate the actions by U.S. government regulators. The USDA, for example, tried to ban sodium nitrite in the late 1970's but was overridden by the meat industry. It insisted the chemical was safe and accused the USDA of trying to "ban bacon."

Today, the corporations that dominate American food and agricultural interests hold tremendous influence over the FDA and USDA. Consumers are offered no real protection from dangerous chemicals intentionally added to foods, medicines and personal care products.

You can protect yourself and your family from the dangers of processed meats by following a few simple rules:

1. Always read ingredient labels.

2. Don't buy anything made with sodium nitrite or monosodium glutamate.

3. Don't eat red meats served by restaurants, schools, hospitals, hotels or other institutions.

And finally, eat more fresh produce with every meal. There is evidence that natural vitamin C found in citrus fruits and exotic berries (like camu camu) helps prevent the formation of cancer-causing nitrosamines, protecting you from the devastating health effects of sodium nitrite in processed meats. The best defense, of course, is to avoid eating processed meats altogether!

Boost your body’s immune system

Boost your body’s immune system

Super foods help combat an assortment of ailments

One of the best prescriptions for good health is also one of the easiest to follow: watch what you eat. Every day, new studies prove that eating the right foods regularly can help reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease, banish the blues and increase energy and vitality. Here are 10 nutrient-packed “super foods” that should top everyone’s grocery list.

1. Broccoli
This is one mean green! Broccoli is chock-full of the phytochemical sulforaphane, which makes headlines because of its potent anti-cancer properties. It’s also a rich source of beta-carotene (good for the eyes and immune system, among other things), fibre and vitamin C.
Toronto registered dietitian and author Liz Pearson was so convinced of the health benefits of this “King of Cruciferous Vegetables” that she called her first book When in Doubt, Eat Broccoli! But Leave Some Room for Chocolate (Penguin Books, 1998). For fast, easy and delicious ways to add vegetables — including broccoli — to your diet, visit 5 to 10 a day.

2. Blueberries
If you haven’t gone blueberry picking since you were a kid, here’s a reason to start again. In a peer-reviewed study of 100 common fruits, vegetables and nuts in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, these blue jewels had one of the highest antioxidant capacities (the ability to combat cell-damaging free radicals that can lead to heart disease and cancer). And, like cranberries, blueberries appear to fight off urinary-tract infections by preventing E. coli bacteria from sticking to cells in the urinary tract.
John Stanton, president of the Running Room Canada, says he always starts his day with a big bowl of fresh fruit, including blueberries when they’re in season. “It’s light, it’s healthy, and then I’m ready to run.” For more on the power of blue, including tasty recipes for everything from wild blueberry chicken breasts to blueberry sorbet, check out Wild Blueberries.

3. Flax
“Ground flaxseed is the one thing I make sure I eat every day,” says Mairlyn Smith, co-author of The Ultimate Healthy Eating Plan That Still Leaves Room for Chocolate (Whitecap Books, 2002). Smith says flax is a great source of both soluble and insoluble fibre (which makes it a natural laxative) as well as plant lignans which may reduce the risk of developing hormone-sensitive cancers, such as prostate and breast cancer.
Flaxseed is also high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to protect against heart disease. Smith eats a flaxseed muffin or sprinkles a tablespoon of ground flaxseed on her cereal every day. For more information on the health benefits of flax, including delicious ways to cook with it, visit the Flax Council of Canada.

4. Garlic
Since ancient times, physicians have used the “stinking rose” to treat health conditions including heart disease. Garlic contains allicin, a phytochemical that may lower cholesterol and make blood platelets less sticky, cutting the risk of clots.
In Mississauga, Ont., naturopath Rana Singh swears by the immune-boosting, cold-fighting power of the humble garlic bulb. He recommends chopping or crushing two or three cloves of fresh, raw garlic and adding them to whatever you’re eating.
For information on the health benefits of garlic and great ways to cook with it, visit The Garlic Information Centre and Garlic Sleuth. (Note: Consult your doctor before including more garlic than is customary in your diet.)

5. Green tea
Green tea is loaded with powerful antioxidants, which may protect against cell damage that leads to aging and help prevent heart disease and cancer. Green tea contains a polyphenol known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), which in animal tests has been shown to prevent the formation of tumors. Researchers at Purdue University found in laboratory tests that EGCg killed human breast cancer cells but did not kill non-cancerous human breast cells.
Paulette Bourgeois, author of the Franklin the Turtle series of kids’ books, drinks green tea several times a day. “It’s not only healthy, it’s soothing,” she says. For more information on the health benefits of tea, visit the Tea Association of Canada.

6. Skim milk
“The one food I consciously remind myself to consume and monitor regularly is milk, since I know that I may not drink enough of it in the course of my regular routine to keep my bones strong,” says food writer and cookbook author Dana McCauley.
She’s not alone. Most women don’t get enough calcium, and one in four white women (the rate is lower in black and Hispanic women) will develop osteoporosis. Studies have found that increasing your calcium intake can also help relieve the symptoms of PMS.
To meet your daily quota, reach for three servings of milk or milk products. After a tough workout, make it low-fat chocolate milk, advises McGill University fitness coordinator Jill Barker. “It has the requisite amount of carbs and protein needed to promote optimal recovery in the working muscles.”
Visit the Dairy Farmers of Canada for more tips on adding calcium to your diet.

7. Salmon
Fresh or canned salmon is one of the best sources of the celebrated Omega-3 fatty acids, which can help prevent heart attacks. Studies have also shown that Omega-3 may have the ability to offset depression as well as protect against inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.
“I try to eat salmon twice a week, as do my kids,” says nutritionist Rosie Schwartz, author of The Enlightened Eater’s Whole Foods Guide.

8. Soy
Protein is one of the nutrients that most women don’t get enough of. They should have a protein-rich food every three to four hours during the day to keep energized, says dietitian Linda Barton.“Soy is perfect since it’s a plant-based protein that’s low in saturated fat.”
Soybeans and soy protein products — including tofu, miso, tempeh and soy drinks — also contain phytoestrogens that may slow the growth of some cancers, lower cholesterol and offer some protection against osteoporosis. Visit the Soyfoods Association of North America for more information and recipes.

9. Spinach
When asked to name one of her favourite super foods, Toronto registered dietician Leslie Beck praised spinach. It’s loaded with energy-promoting iron and folate, a B vitamin that prevents neural-tube defects in the fetus. It is important in red blood cell formation, protein metabolism, growth and cell division. The leafy green is also one of the best sources of lutein, an antioxidant that benefits eye, skin and cardiovascular health. For more information on the health benefits of spinach, visit

10. Tomatoes
Research has found that tomatoes, especially cooked or processed ones, can lower the risk of some cancers and heart disease. Experts attribute this to lycopene, a potent antioxidant and the pigment that makes tomatoes red. A Harvard University study found that men who regularly ate tomato-based foods had lower rates of prostate cancer.
“We love tomatoes,” says Diane Clement, who founded the popular Tomato Fresh Food Cafe in Vancouver. She and her husband, Dr. Doug Clement, start their evening meal with their favourite tomato and bocconcini cheese salad. “The juicy tomatoes, loaded with lycopenes galore, are the perfect healthy jumpstart for any body,” she says. Important of Vitamin D

Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, plays an important role in preventing falls and fractures.

Calcium and vitamin D are both equally important in maintaining good bone health. However, the role of vitamin D is often underestimated.

Vitamin D has two main functions:
·It is needed for the absorption of calcium for healthy bones.
·It is also important for muscle strength and balance to prevent falls.
Low vitamin D leads to osteoporosis and weak muscles, and increases the risk of falls and fractures.

Benefits of vitamin D
Supplementation with adequate amounts of vitamin D has significant benefits when it comes to improved muscle function, and reduction in falls and fractures.
Sunlight is the major source of vitamin D. However, spending too much time indoors, cultural trends of clothing, increased skin pigmentation, increasing age (70-year-old women are only 25% as efficient at producing vitamin D with the same sun exposure as when they were 30 years of age), obesity and use of sunscreen have contributed to low vitamin D levels.
