Protect Liver

To understand more what human liver is.

The liver is one of the hardest working organs in the body, so it’s only natural that you should take special care of it.

DID you know that the liver is the largest solid organ in the body? If you place your right hand over the area under the ribs on the right side of your body, it will just about cover the area of your liver. It weighs some 1.8kg in men and 1.3kg in women, and holds approximately 13% of your total blood supply at any given moment.

The liver also performs over 5,000 important functions every minute of the day to keep your body going. It is dark reddish-brown in colour and is divided into two main lobes (the much larger right and the smaller left), which are further subdivided into approximately 100,000 small lobes, or lobules.

What are the liver functions ?

Now, let’s take a look at the functions of the liver. The liver has a multitude of important and complex functions. Some of these functions include:
·Manufacturing (synthesise) proteins and blood clotting factors.
·Synthesising, storing, and processing fats, including fatty acids (used for energy) and cholesterol.
·Metabolising and storing carbohydrates, which are used as a source of sugar (glucose) in the blood that red blood cells and the brain use.
·Forming and secreting bile that contains bile acids to aid in intestinal absorption (taking in) of fats and the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.
·Eliminating potentially harmful biochemical products produced by the body, such as ammonia (from the breakdown of proteins).
·Detoxifying drugs, alcohol, and environmental toxins.
·Combating infections in the body.
